What to expect at your first osteopathy appointment
Feeling unsure about your first osteopathy appointment? Here is what usually happens, from your initial conversation through to examination and treatment.

What to expect at your first osteopathy appointment
If you have never visited an osteopath before, it is natural to wonder what will happen during your appointment. Your first visit gives your osteopath time to understand why you have come, assess your symptoms and discuss the most appropriate next steps with you.
Your initial consultation
Your osteopath will begin by asking about your current symptoms, including when they started, what affects them and how they are interfering with your everyday activities.
They will also ask about your general health, medical history, medication and any previous injuries or treatment. This information helps your osteopath build a fuller picture of your health and identify anything that may affect your assessment or treatment.
Please bring a list of your current medication and the details of any relevant scans, test results or medical letters if you have them.
Examination and assessment
Depending on your symptoms, your osteopath may ask you to perform some simple movements so they can assess your mobility and see what feels comfortable or restricted.
They may also examine areas such as your muscles, joints and posture. Occasionally, other appropriate clinical checks may be carried out. Your osteopath will explain what they are doing and why.
You may be asked to remove some clothing so the relevant area can be examined properly. If you would feel more comfortable wearing shorts and a vest top, you are welcome to bring them with you.
Discussing what they find
Following the assessment, your osteopath will explain what they think may be contributing to your symptoms. They will discuss whether osteopathic treatment is appropriate and outline the available options.
If your osteopath believes that further investigation or advice from your GP or another healthcare professional is needed, they will explain this to you.
Treatment
Where appropriate, treatment can often begin during your first appointment. Osteopathic treatment is hands-on and may include techniques such as soft-tissue work, stretching and joint movement or mobilisation. The techniques used will depend on your symptoms, general health and individual needs.
Your osteopath will explain the proposed treatment, including its intended benefits and any relevant risks, and ask for your consent before proceeding. You can ask questions or change your mind at any point.
You may also be given advice about movement, exercise or practical changes that could support your recovery between appointments.
Before you book
Every patient and every appointment is different. Treatment recommendations will be based on your individual assessment rather than a standard course of care.
